Subsequent to its sale by Viacom, Harmonix Music Systems (now an independent company) began working on a new intellectual property for mobile platforms. However, this was not their first foray into mobile territory. They released Phase for iPod in 2007 and co-developed the iOS iteration of their outstanding Rock Band franchise. In mid-August Harmonix co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopulos revealed their new project, VidRhythm, for the iOS platform.
VidRhythm is not a ‘game’ per se, but more of a tool to create short songs using the cameras and microphones on the iPad 2, iPhone 3GS/4/4S and iPod Touch (4th/5th generation).
Creating your masterpiece/abomination is extremely simple. Upon launching the app, you select one of 21 songs and one of 10 themes. After that, it’s just a matter recording each part of the song using the mic/camera. Instructions and hints are available if you don’t know what to do such as Make a cymbal sound, like “PSHH!” You can re-record portions you aren’t happy with or even swap themes for something else. When you’re all done, tap “Make Video Music!” and a few seconds later your video is ready for viewing. That’s it! Songs are generally 1 – 1.5 minutes long. Now, you don’t have to follow the instructions to the letter if you don’t want. Record whatever crazy sounds and visuals you wish. Who knows? The results might be hilarious!
I’ve spent a great deal of time messing around with the different song/theme combinations making all sorts of weird videos (mostly when my wife’s not around!). It’s a lot of fun and for a couple of bucks, it’s a great buy. There’s even an option to upload your creation to YouTube for the world to see. You can see one of my ‘finer’ attempts below done to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, 1st Movement.
VidRhythm is available in the iTunes Store for $1.99 (iTunes Link) and is a universal iPhone/iPad app.

That video is maybe the very best review accompaniment I’ve ever seen. The visuals are incredible as well, wow. Does the game let you import photos from your local library?
It’s definitely got some charm to it. That theme is called “A Touch of Class.” Indeed. You can’t import pictures for any additional themes but there is a way of using your own music. It’s a bit of an involved process though.
Bummer dude! Lots of class there.
