Lego Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit on the way – games not too far behind?

Lego Lord of the Rings

If you’re a fan of The Games Day Podcast, you’ll know that I’m not the world’s biggest fan of the Lord of the Rings. I typically read through 3/4 of the first book and get bored of all the walking and picnics. However I am a huge fan of Traveller’s Tales’ Lego games including Lego Pirates of the Caribbean and the Lego Star Wars series.

Yesterday, Warner Bros announced that they’d entered into a partnership with Lego to make build kits of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. From the Warner release:

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products has delivered numerous worldwide successes in the construction toy aisle with lines like LEGO HARRY POTTER and LEGO BATMAN, introducing us to loyal audiences who love great stories, strong characters and the toys that they inspire,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. “It’s particularly exciting to now be able to create sets based on the fantasy worlds and characters from THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and the two films based on THE HOBBIT, not only because we know they will foster collectability and creative play, but also because these are two properties that our fans have been asking us to create for years.”

I am an absolute sucker for Lego and even tho I’m not historically a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, I’ve always been a fan of the medieval Lego sets. This might be the turning point that makes me actually enjoy the Lord of the Rings series.

Can haz games?

Based on the buzz that still surrounds the movies, I can forsee Warner Bros and Lego selling an absolute ton of these kits. If (when) they do, it’ll hopefully translate into a multiple-platform videogame product like Lego Batman did (talking Warner properties here). I think a Lego Lord of the Rings videogame franchise would do very, very well and could also include some cool features like the ground battles found in Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars.

Lego Batman reviewed fairly well when it came out but was not 5 gold hearts anywhere. I hope that Warner Bros doesn’t see that and doubt the sales potential of a possible game. If I was a betting man, I’d wager that a Lord of Rings videogame will probably happen (if it’s not already being worked on now).

What do you think? Would you buy a Lego Lord of the Rings game? What would be some hilights you’d like to see in a future Lego Lord of the Rings videogame?
